Use the lockdown for me time

When have you ever had 21 days all to yourself to spend at home doing anything your heart desires (as long as it is at home)? I am using the lockdown for me time.

For the first time ever, South Africans have to stay at home for three consecutive weeks. This is to help limit the spread of the novel Coronavirus. In many other countries, citizens face similar constraints.

In a strange way the world is coming together as one to keep people apart to fight the spread of the virus.

Instead of stressing about 21 days in lockdown and worrying about not being physically connected to the outside world, I decided to look forward to the type of me time that I will probably never have again.

Experts say that taking time out for yourself allows you to unwind, bring your stress levels down and recharge your batteries.

I feel very privileged that I am able to unwind and recharge for 21 days.

Try to fuel your body with great nutrients. I treat myself to a wholesome lunch every day. Try to eat lots of vegetables and fruit, they are good for you.

By still being productive, you can benefit holistically from staying at home by focussing on yourself and possibly enjoying one of the following me time activities:

  • Unplug from the outside world

Take time out during your morning coffee or afternoon tea and disconnect yourself from your phone and any social media. Rather read a book, stand outside for some fresh air or simply stare out the window and daydream.

  • Create something

Get your creative juices flowing and make or create something. Draw, paint, write, sculpt, color or bake a cake. The creation doesn’t have to be perfect, it is the act of creating that is important. You can even try gardening. If you have some seeds around the house try to plant something that will grow in winter, in pots if you don’t have a garden.

  • Call an old friend

Maintaining positive relationships is good for the soul. Take time out of your day and call or video call one of your old friends or family members. Chat to catch up and enjoy good company.

  • Upgrade your daily shower

Make yourself feel special by pampering yourself in the shower or bath. Add extra bubbles or aromatherapy oils if you have these available, but just some soothing background music will make it feel like a luxurious home spa.

  • Do an online course

Whether this be learning a new language, being more advanced in yoga or learning how to think critically like philosophers, think of something you’ve always wanted to learn more about and register for an online short-course. There are many free courses available.

  • Exercise

Movement is medicine. Take at least 30 minutes out of your day to exercise. Follow fitness instructors on social media or YouTube to get ideas for home workouts and find a small space in or around your house to keep active daily.

Try to get creative and bake something you love. I baked oat and almond scones.
  • Treat yourself

Treat yourself to something indulgent by baking cupcakes, cookies or just making a warm, satisfying dessert and enjoy every luscious bite.

  • Clear your head

Meditate, do some yoga, stretch or dance your heart out to your favorite upbeat tunes to clear your head. Find a time in the day when you can be completely alone and just let go for a few minutes.
