Our student news initiative kicks off

On this day, 90 years ago, the mini planet Pluto was discovered. 120 years ago the Battle of Paardeberg, near Kimberley, was fought during the South African War.

55 years ago African American church deacon Jimmie Lee Jackson was beaten to death during a peaceful march for civil rights in Alabama. Eight days later the Selma to Montgomery march took place because of his death. This march led to the establishment of full voting rights for African Americans just a few months later.

And in 2020 threestreamsmedia launches, on this day, a news website run by students, for students and staff, and people in the surrounding communities, at North-West University. This is a live news website run by Honours students from the School of Communication. It is part of our curriculum, as we study to become journalists.

The role of journalists in a democracy can never be underestimated. We are here to hold the powerful accountable, but we are also here to tell stories of ordinary people, stories that affect the daily lives of students – the future of this country, and staff, the people who guide us towards our new careers.

In short, we would like to be your voice. We invite you to get in touch, to talk to us about issues that matter to you, and we will endeavour to do our jobs as journalists to report on the lives of and the things that matter to our community, all of NWU and surrounding towns.

This news site will prepare us for the world of journalism, while providing a platform for reporting on news that matters. We invite you to follow us on this new journey.
