Student complexes go green

OppiKampus, which manages various private student housing facilities in Potchefstroom, has recently announced on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram that it is embarking on an environmental drive as it wants to help reduce waste in the city.

OppiKampus has placed recycling bins behind its offices at the Fairview, The Oaks, and Sofia complexes and sent 158 SMSs to students across these blocks to inform them about the availability of the bins.

Sofia is a complex for female students in Molen Street on the Bult near the campus of North-West University, designed particularly for private individuals. The Oaks is a male and female residence in Steve Biko Street, also near the campus.

“It is a new thing for OppiKampus. We noted that many students were asking questions about recycling, so we identified the need and started this initiative,” said Jaques Kotze, operational manager of OppiKampus.

“So far, waste is being minimised, and the project is progressing well,” he added.

“The litter is collected every day, and the residents do not need to sort the litter because of the recycling bins. We are beginning to enjoy this journey of collecting waste”, said Kotze.

From September, all Oppikampus student apartments have four recycling bins, each with its unique purpose: paper and boxes, glass, plastics, and tins and cans.

Most of the tenants have shown interest and quickly took a step forward by filling up the recycling bins behind Oppikampus offices with plastic bottles.

A second-year sports coaching and human movement sciences student Abigail Dukhi (19) mentioned that not everyone is recycling yet.

“Not everyone takes the time to recycle and put materials in the proper bins. Not everyone throws rubbish in the bins and not everyone knows about recycling.

But to some extent people are more than willing to recycle and take action in helping make the world a better place environmentally, said Dukhi.

Dukhi who is also a resident at Sofia, further said that “recycling is something small but has a huge impact on the environment. It is something easy that everyone can take part in to make a difference, especially students in their residences”, she said. – Lerato Mamabolo, Constance Moholo, Tshepo Mogotlhe and Dylan Isherwood.
