NWU graduate makes masks from leftover fabric

A 27-year old North West University (NWU)  masters graduate in the field of Environmental Management, Ofentse Rabaji, used his academic background to start a project producing face masks from leftover or “scrap” fabric.

Rabaji, from Potchefstroom, spotted a business opportunity during the Covid-19 lockdown. His studies focussed on waste management.

In an email interview, Rabaji, from Potchefstroom, said the company making the masks, Re Fentse Environmental Solutions (Pty) Ltd., is a black-owned company which was established in 2019, with the primary objective of providing sustainable waste management solutions.

Rabaji said his passion for environmental sustainability and bringing about change to society are the driving forces behind the initiative.

Rabaji and his team use “scrap”, also referred to as “leftover” fabric (particularly 100% cotton), to make reusable, three-ply masks to combat the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

Kagiso Mpshane (27), a student at NWU, is a customer of Re Fentse Environmental Solutions. He said he decided to buy his protective mask from the Re Fentse because it offers well-designed, environmentally friendly products at an affordable price.

Helena van der Westhuizen (23), who is currently  doing a business course at NWU, is part of the project and she said that it is very important to give back to the community, so this project also helps people in the community by providing food parcels.
