Sandile Mokoena (17), whose home is in Mpumalanga, was hit by a car allegedly driven by another student (19). The incident happened on 5 August around 17:20 in Hoffman Street.
Police spokesperson Captain Sam Tselanyane said the victim was discharged from hospital and gave a statement on 30 August.
“The investigating officer could not get a statement from the victim earlier due to his severe head injuries. [Following the accident] the victim was in ICU first, and later in a normal ward to recover,” said Tselanyane.
Henry Mothame, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the accused was released on R1000 bail after appearing in the Potchefstroom Magistrate Court on 7 August. The case was postponed to 18 October.
“The accused was pulled over by the police due to speeding and he was charged with reckless or negligent driving and there was alcohol found in his blood,” said Mothame.
Tselanyane says eyewitnesses helped the police identify the accused as they gave them the description of the car, which was later stopped.
