Your guide to lockdown live sport and entertainment

Necessity is the mother of invention. Sport and entertainment events around the world have been cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown regulations. But the show goes on. Various live sport and entertainment events moved online. Below is a guide to some of these.

The first ever virtual MotoGP race takes place on Sunday 29 March. It will be screened on the official MotoGP site as well as on its Facebook page (above).

Sunday 29 March from 3pm – The first ever MotoGP virtual race takes place on the official MotoGP video game at a virtual version of the Autodromo del Mugello in Italy. Participants include many big names in MotoGP racing including Marc Marquez and Maverick Viñales. Watch the race live on the official MotoGP website or on their YouTube channel, or on SuperSport 1 on DStv. Qualifiers start at 3pm.

Sunday 29 March at 5pm – Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria hosts a live e-concert with some of the biggest names in Afrikaans music, including Amanda Strydom, Joshua na die Reën, Jak de Priester, André Schwartz and many others. Tickets are R50 each and are available on Atterbury Theatre’s website. There will be further e-concerts on 5 April and 12 April.

Sunday 29 March at 6pm – Peter Pentz, a communication alumnus from NWU, has a live interview with rock singer Francois van Coke on his Instagram page.

Wednesday 1 April at 6pm – Erika Botha from the alternative rock band Erika en die Dudes offers a live acoustic session on her Instagram and Facebook pages. The band plays mainly alternative rock and they play a mixture of Afrikaans and English songs. “The songs we play are covers of well-known songs that everybody can relate to, and our own original songs,” Botha said.

Thursday 2 April at 12pm (until 5 May) – The NWU Art Gallery will open an online exhibition that brings together recently exhibited work by Phoka Nyokong and Philiswa Lila for the Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award. Visit the gallery’s Facebook page for a link to the exhibition.
