Technology skills: A prerequisite for graduates

Emailing, digital conferencing, word processing, spreadsheets, shortcuts, search engines and social media – these are some of the most essential tech skills that graduates need to fulfill their daily career roles in the workplace, according to a blog on the website of rgbsi, a business solution’s company.

One of the most important reasons why students need technology skills is to prepare them for the workplace.

In a competitive environment where jobs are scarce – SA’s unemployment rate is 34.4% according to August 2021 figures – graduates who have sound technological skills have an advantage.

Refilwe Mathibe (21), a BSc graduate in environmental sciences from the North-West University, Potchefstroom campus, emphasised the significance of technology for undergraduates and graduates.

“One of the most basic skills we all need is understanding Microsoft because it is like a bedrock for working and studying.  Most programs in university help students technologically prepare for the workplace, especially now during online learning.

“In my undergraduate degree, I had computer literacy modules, which was mainly focused on computer skills such as operating systems, computer apparatus and computer information.

“It also comprised information skills which include, research and information, scientific report writing and information. So that encapsulated all the computer skills we need as graduates but the learning never ends” Mathibe said.

Elwodia Ruiters (24), a former education student at the North-West University, remembers her experience using technology for the first time at tertiary level.

‘’I am someone who grew up with nothing within our community. Everything I know about technology I had to learn for myself. Studies have shown that most young unemployed people do not have the basic technology skills that are required in a corporate environment .

‘’As a young educator I think it’s important that we teach students basic technology skills from a very young age. Basic Microsoft skills are very necessary for a formal workplace, employees should be able to work on a computer.

“When I got my first job I knew exactly what was expected from me in a formal workplace because I required all the technical skills I needed. ’’ said Ruiters. – Athi Galadile, Keorapetse Phalane and Sebastian Paulus
