Students help young girls in need

A chartered accounting (CA) student at the North-West University (NWU) in Potchefstroom, together with his cousins, are planning an event in Potchefstroom to supply young girls from families in need with sanitary pads and food packages.

Kamogelo Mogagabe (20) is the founder of a student group called Thuso Ya Bokamuso, which means help for the future.

Mogagabe and his cousins, Kanyisile Sizane (19) and Onalenna Kgomanyane (22), started this group late last year with the aim to help the community in Potchefstroom. “The main objective is to help underprivileged people in our community, especially in schools where they sometimes don’t even have the basic needs,” said Mogagabe.

Many people lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 lockdowns. Mogagabe found a way to help those families. “When parents lose their jobs, the young kids are the ones who suffer the most. I thought let’s start with a small project that can at least help out some parents,” said Mogagabe.

Sizane, being a co-founder of Thuso Ya Bokamuso, explained they are planning an event a day before Youth Day, which is a public holiday. “On the 15th of June we will have an event at Seiphemelo Secondary School where we will be handing out the items we received as donations from everyone. We will also give food parcels to families who are really in need,” said Sizane.

These donations are from NWU students as well as families in the Ikageng area. Items like school shoes, clothes, sanitary towels and food parcels are just some of the items people donate. Mogagabe acknowledged that because his group is not registered yet, it would be hard for corporate companies to donate.

Thuso Ya Bukamuso reaches out to people using social media. Mogagabe even goes as far as knocking on the doors of the OppiRiff campus accommodations for people to donate.

This is not the first time these young students went out of their way to serve the community. On 14 November 2020 they held their first event, where they donated school shoes to Pudulogo Primary School in Ikageng. From that moment on, Sizane always wanted to make a more telling contribution to the children, especially young girls in Ikageng.

“There are a lot of girls in Potchefstroom who can’t afford to buy sanitary towels. For girls, that is the most essential need, so that is why for this upcoming event we have collected sanitary towels, shoes and other basic needs children will be able to use,” said Sizane.
