More than 3.6 million people test positive for Covid-19

The number of people around the world testing positive for Covid-19 passed the 3.6 million mark this week. More than 1.2 million people have recovered.

An interactive visualisation showing live updates of all Covid-19 cases around the globe, created by two students from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, reached the 3.6 million mark this week.

Navid Mamoon and Gabriel Rasskin say on their website the project is meant to show that the virus is not something affecting only “one country, or another country; it’s one planet – and this is what our planet looks like today”.

Rasskin gave threestreamsmedia permission to use their live visualiser to show how the virus is spreading. Readers can click on South Africa, or any other country, to see the very latest novel Coronavirus figures.

Rasskin and Mamoon source their data from Worldometer, a site run by an international team of developers, researchers, and volunteers. The site’s data has been cited in thousands of books and professional journal articles. The Covid-19 map automatically pulls new data every two minutes. The visualiser shows both active cases and recoveries.

*This interactive visualisation replaces the daily map published by threestreamsmedia of Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa. Visit sacoronavirus and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases for more information on the virus in South Africa.
