Last-minute heroics secure victory for Shimlas over Eagles

In a heart-stopping clash that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the UFS-Shimlas emerged victorious against defending champions NWU-Eagles at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein.

Both teams delivered thrilling performances that showcased their skill and determination on the field.

The game got off to an electrifying start as Shimlas captain Pierre Uys powered his way over the try line to give his team an early lead. The Shimlas continued to dominate during the first half, with loose forward Kwezi Dlamini and backrow Siyambuka Ningiza adding to the Free State team’s lead with impressive tries that had the home crowd roaring with delight.

However, the Eagles refused to back down, clawing their way back into the game with a try from hooker Chyle van Zyl just before halftime.

The Eagles’ tenacity paid off as they narrowed the gap in the second half, scoring crucial tries through prop Ntobeko Shezi, substitute scrumhalf Mpho Kubheka, and fullback Shaun-Christian Baxter.

With the scores tied at 26-26 in the dying moments of the match, it was Shimlas’ replacement flanker Henri van Heerden who delivered the decisive blow, scoring a dramatic match-winning try in the 81st minute to seal his team’s victory in epic fashion.
