Hungry to Learn campaign: how your R2 can help another student
The North-West University’s residence and catering service has started an initiative to help feeding students who go hungry.
The ‘Hungry to Learn’ campaign was implemented early in March in the dining halls and cafeterias on all three campuses of the North-West University.

Inspired by KFC’s ‘Add R2 for Hope’ campaign, the ‘Hungry to Learn’ campaign, which asks students to add R2 to their bill at the till, was created to raise funds for the students on campus who cannot afford daily meals and need extra support.
Greg Roberts, the manager of residence and catering services on the Potchefstroom campus and the originator of this campaign, had one simple goal in mind: to feed hungry students.
“I just thought why can’t we implement something like this at the university, where there are students that really need it?” said Roberts.
Collected funds will be distributed as Meal of the Day vouchers to students by the office of Mr Funani Mabala, the director of student life.
Students who have donated to the campaign are enthusiastic about the initiative.
Phillipa Hugo, a fifth-year pharmacy student, says, “I think it’s a good initiative for students who cannot afford meals because we, as fellow students, can offer our help to make funds more accessible to those in need.”
Mhlengi Khumalo, a third-year behavioural sciences and psychology student, says that although the Hungry to Learn campaign seems like a great initiative, students are not sure how their R2 is helping because they don’t see the impact of it.
This initiative is not the only one on campus that is set up to help students. Students who are in need can also ask help from Thuso at building F18 on the Potchefstroom campus.
