NWU-PUK Gospella performed to a packed house on Wednesday night in their first performance of the year in Potchefstroom.

143 tickets were sold and people stood in line excitedly at C6 POK Hall, full of expectation, as they had never seen Gospella perform before.

The choir’s former music director, Karabelo Matshidiso, and former marketing director, Mpho Lekgoe, attended the concert. A family member of one of the singers, Bongeka Silimela, was also there to show support for her daughter.

Gospella left the stage to sing close to the audience. In the front left corner (sitting down) are the parents of Bongekaka Silimela.

Guest performers included the Black Note Ensemble, Divaco Dance, poet Livhuwani Black and Dysfunctional Beat. The MC’s interacted with the audience and Gospella’s choir performances were full of energy. Everyone sang along.

The audience was blown away by the talent, which many of the students never knew existed on campus.

Some of the songs performed were “Ngizobambelela”, “Tender Love”, and “Umlilo”.

Julia Thepa (22), a senior BSc student, said she heard about the concert from a friend and it was her first time seeing the choir’s performance. “I really enjoyed the concert. It was spirit uplifting and the performance by Black Note Ensemble blessed me,” she said.

Moloi Lehlohonolo (23), a BSc Honors student, said, “The event was unique and awesome, I’ve never seen something like this on campus. It is a break from academics and is really amazing because they had energy and every performance surprised us, they can mix songs very well.”

BA Music and society senior student Lukhanyo Monco (22), member of the Black Note Ensemble said, “I am happy to be part of this concert and to be one of the performers. This was really a good experience and I felt blessed. The concert was diverse and I really hope they will do it again.”
