Disney+ to launch in SA soon
Students and staff are excited about the news that the streaming service Disney+ will be launching in South Africa on 18 May 2022, with a subscription fee of R119 per month, or an annual fee of R1190.
Professor Verona Leendertz (49), director of Technology Enhanced Learning and Innovative Education and Training in South Africa (TELIT-SA), which is a research entity of the North-West University (NWU), said “when the 18th of May arrives, I will be subscribing to Disney+ as Frozen is one of my favourite movies and it’s not an expensive streaming service to have.”
Saabir Khan (27), a third-year BA psychology student, said that he would be subscribing to Disney+ because he wants to watch the Marvel shows that were released last year. “I can’t wait to be able to watch WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier without having to pay for a VPN just to have access to the website,” said Khan.
With a wide variety of streaming services, including Netflix, Showmax, DStv Now, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video already available in South Africa, Disney+ will be entering a competitive market.
Streaming service | Monthly cost for premium service |
Netflix | R199.00 |
Disney+ | R119.00 |
Amazon Prime Video | R79.00 |
Showmax | R99.00 |
DStv Now | R829.00 |
Apple TV | R84.99 |
In a statement from Disney on Twitter, they confirmed that the subscription will include content from the Star entertainment hub, which includes content from the company’s subsidiaries such as: hulu, FOX, Freeform and others. This means that besides family friendly shows and movies there will also be content for more mature audiences, including Grey’s Anatomy.
