Defending champs dominate against Wits

In a thrilling match at the Fanie du Toit stadium in Potchefstroom, the FNB NWU Eagles showcased its dominance as the team secured a resounding victory – by 29 points – over FNB Wits. The final score was 51-22.

The Eagles, coming off its first defeat against UFS-Shimlas of the season on 4 March, appeared determined to bounce back.

The first half saw the Eagles come out firing on all cylinders, with hooker Chyle van Zyl scoring in the 10th minute, centre Christiaan Vlok 3 minutes thereafter, and only 4 minutes later winger Naiden Jaarts, also crossed the try line to give the home side an early lead.

Mokoena’s try kept game competitive

Despite a response from Witsies in the first half, through hooker Dewet Lottering and fullback Setshaba Mokoena, who both scored, the Eagles continued to pile on the pressure with loose forward Marvelous Mashimbyi adding to its tally in the 23rd minute of the first half.

However, Wits fought back with more tries later in the first half. Mokoena scored again in the 28th minute and flanker Dewet-Grant Fourie, shortly thereafter, keeping the game competitive.

As the first half ended, the Eagles held a narrow lead of 30-22, setting the stage for an intense second half. And the teams did not disappoint.

Victory sealed in last 5 minutes

In the second half, the Eagles continued their attacking prowess with Van Zyl securing his brace, followed by a sensational solo effort from winger Keano Windvogel to further extend their lead in the 63rd minute. Flanker Hennie du Randt put the game outcome beyond doubt with a try in the last five minutes of the match, sealing a comprehensive victory for the defending champions.

The final scoreline of 51-22 reflected the Eagles’ dominance on the field, as it showcased their skill, teamwork, and determination to secure a bonus point victory. The Witsies put up a valiant effort but ultimately could not contain the relentless pressure from the Eagles.

With this performance, the FNB NWU Eagles have sent a clear message to rivals in the Varsity Cup that this team is a force to be reckoned with. As it continues its campaign, the Eagles will look to build on this victory and maintain its momentum as it strives for further success in the competition. The NWU Eagles now sits second on the log, behind UFS Shimlas, who won their game against UWC by 22 points.
