Coronavirus derails Olympic Games, other sport events

The first Coronavirus case on South African soil was confirmed on 5 March, and with the number of cases increasing daily, countries all over the world are taking drastic measures to flatten the curve. This includes cancelling most sport events.

The 2020 Olympic Games, due to be held in Japan in July, have just been postponed to next year, but this is merely the greatest of many sport events around the world that have been cancelled or postponed.

On Sunday 15 March, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that gatherings of more than 100 people would be banned indefinitely, bringing the world of sport in South Africa to a standstill.
