Community service bus tours to be hosted online this year

The annual Student RAG Community Service (SRCS) bus tours will be a virtual event this year, due to Covid-19 social distancing regulations.

Virtual bus tours will commence on social media on 5 April 2021. Bus tours are held annually during the registration and orientation period, introducing first year students to their residence’s SRCS project, according to the North-West University (NWU) webpage dedicated to information about SRCS.

“We’re excited to announce this new project, it is an opportunity of growth for us,” Yolané Pienaar, Student Campus Council (SCC) member responsible for SRCS, said in an interview, during which she also confirmed the virtual continuation of bus tours.

According to Pienaar, SRCS house committee (HC) members of residences across campus have been visiting their respective community service projects to film videos for this event. The videos will be uploaded onto various social media platforms, introducing the first-year students to their residence’s projects. “House committee members have been working hard throughout March to ensure the success of this virtual project,” she said.

According to Jana Schlechter (20), SRCS HC member of Heide women’s residence, preparation for the virtual bus tours was a positive experience. “I felt at home when I got there, I immediately knew SRCS was back,” she said. Schlechter is excited about the videos being posted onto social media. “Virtual bus tours might not be ideal, but it’s an opportunity to show first-year students what SRCS is all about,” she said.

Madelein de Jager (21), SRCS HC member of Oosterhof women’s Residence and responsible for a preschool in Ikageng, said: “I was impressed with how well the school was following Covid-19 regulations, all of the children had masks on and had hand sanitisers readily available to them.”
